What is Google AI Mode?

By seodada teamUpdated

Google Search's conversational mode, which answers a query with a generated response, links the pages it drew on, and takes follow-up questions. Google says it can run several related searches across subtopics behind one question, a technique it calls query fan-out.

AI Mode follows the same eligibility rule as AI Overviews: Google states that a page shown as a link must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Search with a snippet, with no additional technical requirements. Snippet controls such as nosnippet and max-snippet apply to it as well.

Because one question can set off several searches, a page that answers one sub-question well can be drawn into the answer even when it is not the strongest result for the original query.

Example

A question such as "which SEO tool suits a small agency in India" could be split into separate searches about prices, features and reviews. A pricing page with a clear, dated price table is then a candidate for the part of the answer about prices.

AI Visibility can include Google's AI Mode as an optional extra check for each keyword, alongside AI Overview citations and ChatGPT mentions. The GEO guide explains how generative engines pick their sources.
